The definition of gratitude is that of a positive emotion in response to a benefit, which an individual is about to or has received.
In the past, the study of understanding distress, anguish and negative emotion has been forefront within the world of psychology, until recently. Now, the focus has been flipped towards the use and affects of positive psychology.  

The ability to put your mind into a stance of gratitude is not difficult by any means, but the manner to realise when to do it or how often is the problem. Living a life full of achievement is a sought after thing and a sense or realisation of achievement does occur, but for this to be repeated, it has to be reflected in the way in which you thank yourself, your life, or whatever it has taken for you to achieve this. By doing so it will not only make you appreciate the success but get you in the right frame of mind to repeat this on a regular basis. 

It is also easy to see that by giving gratitude for goals that you wish to achieve, you can give yourself positive action towards achieving them. This is due to the relationship between the state of gratitude, or the emotion that is associated with giving gratitude, and the frequency that the gratitude is being given. The more frequently you give it, the more frequently you will feel a sense of achievement, fulfilment and happiness. 

By having a gratitude rock in your pocket, the association created between the realisation of the gratitude rock being their and the need to give gratitude will lead to your mind constantly giving of a positive emotion. Therefore, instead of you realising what you don’t have you’ll actually be grateful for what you do have, right now, allowing the glass to always be half full.
